1948   State of Emergency declared in Malaysia for communist insurgency - Malayan Emergency begins.

1957   The Federation of Malaya, which does not include Singapore, gains independence from the United Kingdom. Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan becomes the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

1960   September 1

1961   Tunku Abdul Rahman, Prime Minister of Malaya, holds a press conference in Singapore, announcing his idea of formation of the Federation of Malaysia, comprising Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, Brunei and North Borneo(Sabah).

1962   Malaysia is formed with Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, and North Borneo.

1963   July 27

1963   Rioters burn down the British Embassy in Jakarta, to protest the formation of Malaysia.

1965   Singapore is expelled from the Federation of Malaysia, which recognizes it as a sovereign nation. Lee Kuan Yew announces Singapore's independence and assumes the position of Prime Minister of the new island nation.

1965   Pakistan severs diplomatic relations with Malaysia because of the disagreement in the UN.

1966   The British government promises the USA that British troops in Malaysia will stay until more peaceful conditions in the region occur.

1966   Indonesia asks Malaysia for peace negotiations.

1966   The Indonesian and Malayan governments declare that the Indonesian Confrontation is over. A treaty is signed on August 11.

1966   The Philippines reestablishes diplomatic relations with Malaysia.

1967   The United Kingdom announces the closing of its military bases in Malaysia and Singapore. Australia and the U.S. do not approve.

1969   May 13th Incident: Race riots occur in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

1970   Tunku Abdul Rahman resigns as prime minister of Malaysia, and is succeeded by his deputy Tun Abdul Razak.

1975   The term of Tuanku Al-Mutassimu Billahi Muhibbudin Sultan Abdul Halim Al-Muadzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, as the 5th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, ends.

1975   Sultan Yahya Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim Petra, Sultan of Kelantan becomes the 6th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

1977   Malaysia Airlines Flight 653 is hijacked and crashed in Johor, Malaysia, killing 100.

1979   Sultan Yahya Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim Petra, the 6th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, dies in offi He is replaced by Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Mustain Billah ibni Almarhum Sultan Sir Abu Bakar Riayatuddin Al-Muadzam Shah, Sultan of Pahang.

1984   The term of Sultan Ahmad Shah as the 7th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia ends.

1984   Sultan Iskandar, Sultan of Johor, becomes the 8th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

1988   Thirty-two people are killed and 1,674 injured when a bridge at the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry terminal collapses in Butterworth, Malaysia.

1989   The term of Baginda Almutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail as the 8th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia ends.

1989   Sultan Azlan Muhibbudin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuff Izzudin Shah Ghafarullahu-lahu, Sultan of Perak, becomes the 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

1993   48 people were killed when a block of the Highland Towers collapsed near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

1994   End of term for Sultan Azlan Muhibbudin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuff Izzudin Shah Ghafarullahu-lahu as 9th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

1999   Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj, Sultan of Selangor, becomes the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

2004   One of the worst natural disasters in recorded history hits southeastern Asia when the strongest earthquake in 40 years hits the entire Indian Ocean region. The massive 9.3 magnitude earthquake, epicentered just off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, generates enormous tsunami waves that crash into the coastal areas of a number of nations including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Burma and Indonesia. The official death toll in the affected countries stands at 186,983 while more than 40,000 people are still missing.
