631 BC Founding of Cyrene, a Greek colony in Libya (North Africa) (approximate date).
485 BC Darius I, one of the greatest rulers of the Achaemenid dynasty of Persia, dies and is succeeded by his son, Xerxes I. During this time the Persian empire extends as far west as Macedonia and Libya and as far east as the Hyphasis (Beas) River; it stretches to the Caucasus Mountains and the Aral Sea in the north and to the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Desert in the south.

1981 Gulf of Sidra incident (1981). Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi sends two Sukhoi Su-22 fighter jets to intercept two US fighters over the Gulf of Sidra. The American jets destroy the Libyan fighters.
1982 The United States places an embargo on Libyan oil imports, alleging Libyan support of terrorist groups.
1984 WPC Yvonne Fletcher is shot and killed by a secluded gunman during a siege outside the Libyan Embassy in London.
1986 April 5 La Belle discotheque bombing: The West Berlin discotheque, a known hangout for U.S. soldiers, is bombed, killing 3 and injuring 230; Libya is held responsible.
1986 Opération coup de poing: the French Air Force badly damages the Libyan airbase of Ouadi Doum in northern Chad.
1987 At Fada the Chadian army destroys a Libyan armoured brigade.
1988 Pan Am Flight 103 is blown up by Libyan terrorists over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 259 on board and 11 on the ground. (Iran is originally suspected of planting the bomb as revenge for the accidental American shooting of Iran Air Flight 655 on July 3, 1988.)
1991 American and British authorities announce indictments against 2 Libyan intelligence officials, in connection with the downing of the Pan Am Flight 103.
1999 Two Libyans suspected of bringing down Pan Am flight 103 in 1988 are handed over to Scottish authorities for eventual trial in the Netherlands. The United Nations suspends sanctions against Libya.
