The Orion Nebula is a nubula located within the borders of the constellation Orion atthe coordinates Right Ascension 05 35.4 and Declination -05 27. It is 1,600 light years fromthe planet Earth making it the 9th furthest Messier catalog object from Earth. It has a size of 85 x 60 arc minutes.

Designation:
The Orion Nebula is one of 12 nebulae included in the Messier Catalog of deep sky objects. It is known by the Messier number M42. It has an NGC catalog number of NGC 1976.

Discoverer:
The Orion Nebula was discovered by the astronomer Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc in 1610.
