The Messier Object M42 is a Diffuse Nebula discovered by Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc in 1610. It has an angular size of 85 x 60 arc minutes.

Location:
M42 is located within the borders of the constellation Orion at RA 05 35.4 and Declination -05 27. It is 1,600 light years from Earth which makes it the 9th furthest Messier Object from Earth.

Brightness:
Compared to the other objects from the Messier catalog, M42 is a relatively bright deep space object with a visual magnitude of 4.
