The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy is a galaxy which is located inside the constellation Hydra at the coordinates Right Ascension 13 37.0 and Declination -29 52. It is 15,000,000 light years from the planet Earth making it the 79th furthest Messier catalog object from Earth. It has an angular size of 11 x 10 arc minutes.

Designation:
The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy is one of 12 galaxies included in the Messier Catalog of deep sky objects. It is known by the Messier number M83. It has an NGC catalog number of NGC 5236.

Discoverer:
The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy was discovered by the astronomer Nicholas Louis de la Caille in 1751-1752.
