Well, Prometheus brought fire to mortals. This was considered horrible to the gods, but it brought evolution in a way and we became civilized. Therefore, we consider him a hero or champion because he brought us a new way of life, regardless of the other gods.

Prometheus helped men when his brother and the gods wouldn't. He gave them fire, as compensation since his brother gave animals all the good traits.

In Greek myth, he supposedly gave fire to mankind for their benefit. But according to the Judaic version of him (Azazel), he taught men the use of fire so they would make weapons and destroy each other.
