as percription level increases with age, does the quality of glasses decrease. that is I have one eye that is at a 5 power level. previously I had little distortion when looking though the lenses accross the lens field. With my new glasses I can no longer even look at a full sentence without distortion on each side, in fact I can only focus on about three words at a time. This lack or clarity is the same for all areas of my new bifocals. I have been told that distortion is normal, but I cannot get used to these. And they are giving me tremendous headaches. is this normal? How long does it take ofr me to get "Used " to them.

The answer to your question is complex. Adaptation time depends on the individual.

Depending on the type of lens you are wearing, the "distortion" you see can be minimised either with minimal success or extreme success. If you are wearing a single vision lens, you should have an aspheric or double aspheric design, which decreases the effect lens curves have on the vision.

See http://www.essilor.co.nz/lens_design/technical_information/nikon_seemax/ for information, although most good lens designers have this type of lens in their bag.

If you are wearing a multi-focal design, bi-focal, tri-focal or progressive lens, the options are more complicated. You should visit a qualified and licensed or registered dispensing optician for good advice.

Also - you might want to return to your optometrist or ophthalmologist armed with the website information above.

Good luck.
