from available records, badagry was said to have been founded by a farmer called Agbede from Apa settlement and that the founder of Apa was a prince from Ile-ife. Following from this premise, it is safe to conclude that the founder of Badagry could not have been an ogu man but yoruba. My position is not any way a repudiation of the fact that at a particular point in the history of badagry the ogu people came into the picture.

Your comments are really stimulating. We should note, however, that much is lost when we rely on these "records". Because of the differences in the languages of the Yorubas and Ogus, it is possible that the name could have been mispronounced and altered over time. The oral tradition from which I benefited says the name is "Agbatha" which could not have been a Yoruba name because of the consonant "th" as in "the". The coinage "Agbathagrime" or "Agbathaglime" i.e Agbatha's farm is also Ogu not Yoruba. Does it not sound questionable then that a man founds a settlement but calls it by a name in a language different from his? It is clear that attempts were made to Yorubanize this by calling it Agbadarigi, replacing the consonant sound that Yorubas do not have with a close substitute "d" and altering the consonant cluster "gr" or "gl" altogether. Yet, the whiteman's coinage Badagry still calls attention to the root of the name. Kunnuji, M.
