Concerning the Canopus at Coronel. I have read previously that one of the engineering officers on board, who was later said to be suffering from a mental breakdown, reported that the engines/boilers wre in a worse shape than they were and the ship could have steamed the
four knots faster as was anticipated by the admiralty. My question is, had the true speed of the Canopus been known to Craddock and he had waited for her to reinforce his squadron, a) would the two forces have still met?
b) would von Spee still have engaged?
c} what would have been the likely result of the battle?
Only hypothetical I know, but this has always intrigued me.
