Back when the cowboys and indians were fighting over southern Michigan (50's and 60's) We had two large 50' or so sassafras trees growing on our property with several smaller "fencerow" types that had the typical three version leaves. The large trees only had the single lobe (simple) leaf and in the fall, turned a deep maroon red, while the smaller types were yellow, crimson and orange. Question I have is were these different species, or does sassafras, after a certain point in their maturity, lose the two, and three lobe leaves, rich fall colors, and become single lobes and just turn deep maroon in the autumn?
