American Black Oystercatcher

Today I spotted roughly 1-week old Black Oystercatcher who probably fell off the nest attempting to fly.. He was guided by a pair (his parents) Black Oystercatchers.. The chick kept running away and got so close to the cliff that I was afraid he'd get swept away by the magnificent tides. So..I picked him up and ran to the beach away from the tides. I put him on the ground and the chick quickly found a spot to hide. I then went back to the cliff to see if his parents were there. The tides were getting bigger and bigger and I thought that there would be no way for the little guy to safely cross the cliff by himself.. So I ran back to the beach and got the chick from his hidden place, took him in my hands (again) and ran across the cliff. Once I crossed the cliff and the tides where no longer a significant danger for him, I put him on the ground. The chick quickly found a place to hide and laid there still. At about the same time, one of his parents came back to look for him again. The chick kept laying still and his parent was about 20-15 cm away from him screaming loudly. So... my question is whether or not I did more harm to the chick and his parents then a good deed ... I though that I should have never came near that chick in the first place and let the nature rule.. But then I thought that if I didn't picked him up he would've swept in to the ocean, off the cliff by the tides.. I know that some birds (parents) don't take their chicks back if the chicks were touched by humans.. I really hope that it's not the case with Black Oystercatchers and that the chick got "reunited" with his parents just fine!
