You mention that biodegradable plastics can either be bioplastics that are derived from renewable resources or petroleum-based plastics. First question: What types of "renewable resources" are used for the production of bioplastics? Secondly, which is better bioplastics or petroleum-based plastics?

Renewable resources are resources that can be replaced over and over again. In the case of biodegradable plastics this includes plant materials such as corn, potatoes, reed, wheat, palm leaves and sugarcane, just to name a few. Bioplastics are by far a better choice than petroleum-based (PB) plastics. PB plastics are far from being eco-friendly due to the drilling required to access the fossil fuels. Case in point the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Other benefits of bioplastics are that they take about half the energy to produce than PB plastics; they reduce the waste in our landfills and they are biodegradable.
