Yesterday, 17th of June 2009 at about 3pm, a friend and I were returning from lunch in Cape Town and driving down Kloof Road from Kloof Neck Road, towards Clifton, when we drove past a Caracal/Lynx which was nonchalantly standing on the side of the tar road, a few bends before the Round House turn-off. It waited for us to pass and then crossed the road towards Lion's head. It was much bigger than I had thought, about 3 foot high to its head. I am told that sightings are extremely rare in the whole Table Mountain region. Seeing one so close to town was alarming. I have been visiting game reserves across Africa for over 40 years and have never seen a Caracal in the wild. Seeing one 5 minutes from my home was remarkable.
