Air conditioning

Would anyone know why Air Conditioning , like with a HVAC system or heat pump that cools and heats thru ceiling or floor vent system is not normally used in the SE Asia tropics? I see this system is common in the USA and Western Europe but unheard of in Philippines, Thailand etc. Might there be a technical reason or problem with this type of system versus what they all seem to use such as wall units and vent units that hang from ceiling or walls.
Any advisement would be great.

I don't know, maybe the type used in the US are more expensive?
