Devangas are not considered as brahmins because they were dealing with other communities for completion of silk cloth or cotton cloth. For silk cloth with sourastrians and for cotton cloth with dye manufacturers.Because of interaction with these people devangas used to consume non vegitarian food and some people used consume alcohol.SACRED thread was worn even without gayathri mantra hence devangas are not considered as brahmins. since their interaction was with lower classes of society they were also considered the same.

Down gradation devangas started after Manu where in he classified people depending on their jobs.It was during 300-400 BC division of people were made based on professsion.Devangas enjoyed the status of bhramin was lost after the division of people or introduction of caste based on profession.Devangas were weavers hence they were considered as artisans.Even today although devanga proclaim to be bhramins they are not. They are considered as BCM(backward community)in karnataka. They wear janevu sacred thread without sandhaya vandan.
