Why does campbell talk about dragons amd do they have a symbollic meaning? If so what do they represent.

Dragons have many different symbolic meanings.
One is that they represent the totality of nature, the physical plane, represented by the four elements of Greek culture: earth, air, fire and water. They can swim, fly, walk and breathe fire.
They also seem to have a habit of guarding virgins and treasure. This, Campbell links to the Kundalini yoga and the basic monomyth. To achieve spiritual actuality, one must overcome the physical temptations of life - including the need to reproduce, and the will to power (the two main things that drive most people). Jesus did this, as did Buddha. Slaying the Dragon is an analogy for the same process.
