They stand on top of their desks to show their devotion to Mr. Keatings, as well as to show Mr. Keatings that they will not submit to the restricted ways of the school. They are changed people, and unique individuals that can think for themselves. Standing on their desks way their way to show their alleigiance, and their newly found self confidence, independence, and ability to question the way things have always been done.
