Replied to:  Why did sam houston run for president/why did mirabeau lamar run...
Both men were very ambitious. Houston had already been governor of Tennessee and was thought to be heir apparent to Andrew Jackson. But after a marriage scandal he quit and went to Texas. His victory at San Jacinto made him wildly popular with many (but not all) Texans and he easily was elected over Stephen F. Austin. He was constitutionally barred from running for a second consecutive term. Lamar was also an ambitious man; the anti-Houston crowd gathered under his banner when he ran for president in 1838. His two chief rivals died before the election; one by suicide, the other by drowning in Galveston Bay. Houston ran again in 1841; Lamar couldn't, but his vice-president and supporter David Burnet did. After a vicious campaign, Houston trounced Burnet by a wide margin. Anson Jones succeeded Houston in 1844; he was the last Texas president.
