Her dad found out about her stealing a paper for Mark and he sent her to a college somewhere down state I think.

I don't really know, as I'm not that far in the book yet, but I would say because Mark probably thought that she turned him in, or that after the fact that he (Mark) knew that he couldn't use her (Lana) anymore, he just kinda dropped her.
