I'm not familiar with that specific missile, but the ones that the United States have is called beyond the visual range is that the enemy aircraft to be shot down by the US pilot is miles (kilometers)out of the site of the US pilot, but it shows up on his radar and heads up display as an enemy aircraft. The missile is launched before the pilot ever sees the enemy aircraft.

Of course, that does not mean that it hits every time. Fighter/Attack aircraft carry several types of ordnance, for when the other aircraft is in site, and chain guns for very close work.
