We are. The U.S. has 29 nuclear power plant in operation and the NRC has received application for 19 more to be approved for construction here. I worked at a nuke plant for 30 years and they produce a tremendous amount of electricity. The one I worked at has three units with an output of 3,450 megawatts. It would take nearly 1800 wind mills operating at optimum output to replace that. I can't imagine wind allowing that for one and I sure don't want them on my skyline either. Nuke is the ONLY way to go until the fussion reactor can be developed. With this type of reactor there are no radioactive by-products like with fussion reactors. You turn them on and they produce heat from fussion reaction in the reactor and stop producing it when you turn them off. Still 20 -25 years away form that yet.
