Thomas Jefferson said in his 1801 inaugural address:
"Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations – entangling alliances with none."
If we had observed Jefferson's policy and avoided alliances in the Middle East (Israel, for example) we would have prevented the intractible wars and persistent conflict we now experience with the Islamic world.
