There was often a social aspect to lynching, in which the lynching was performed to punish some wrong, real or perceived, and restore the social order.

There was an economic and political aspect as well. When a lynching was successful, it left the victim's property available for sale. Lynching was also used to terrorize blacks so that they would not vote or participate in politics.
