It was part of Rachmaninov's Theme of Paginini. I'd love to find a video of the intro. (That's actually how I found this post.) Never realized it was Tom and Pat. But for some reason the music was spooky to me as a kid. I couldn't stand it then, but now it's one of my favorite classical songs.
