Heavy artillery was relatively new at that time, having been used in the Seven Year's War. Napoleon's reliance on heavy artillery contributed to many of his victories.

Napoleon's soldiers carried the 1777 Charleville rifle. It was a .69 caliber, 5ft long, muzzle-loading, smoothbore musket.
