What is the failure rate of roped hydraulic elevators? Are there any benchmark studies showing how reliable or unreliable they are?

I don't know of any comparision studies. Each manufacturer will of course promote thier product as reliable and the best!

I am a bit familier with Schindler's product and it seems to be no better or worse than it's compatition. They use a plastic (poly) rope sheave that proved to be failure prone in the units I was associated with.

I'm not a proponet of roped hydro's; why is the industry trying to reinvent itself? Elevator's have been around for hundreds of years going back to early cave dwelling when the rope and pully worked and later with stone counterweights in baskets. The basic hole in the ground hydraulic has proven highy dependable when maintained properly.

The introduction of the machine room-less traction unit should be considered for the hydro alturnitive if for some reason that staple of industry, the hole ground hydro, won't fit your project. Joe
