What historical events and historical figures are associated with Thebes,Greece?

Hercules came from Thebes as did, Oedipus. Hercules was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman named, Alcmena. Oedipus, king of Thebes unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. Thebes had its obvious problems. Hercules was on board the ship, Argo when they took off to find The Golden Fleece. Thebes was a major Greek city state.
