My name is Felicia Snead. I am a descendant of Henrietta Lacks. My grandmother's maiden name was Irene Pleasant. I honestly don't know what Henrietta contributions to modern medicine is, but what I do know is very rare forms of cancer run in our family. My dad had liver cancer when he passed away. My aunt had some form of throat cancer when she passed away. My grandmother had cervical cancer I believe when she passed away. One of my cousins had colon cancer at a very young age. Different types of blood cancers also run in my family. Sickle cell thalassemia also runs in our family. I have it and so does my youngest daughter. I am really afraid for both me and my children because cancer runs so vigoriously not only on my grandmother's (my dad's mom) side, but also on my grandfather's (my dad's dad) side of the family. I don't really know what Henrietta's contribution was. I just recently found out about her and the research done on her. All I know is I am grateful that her cells are still alive even if the cells were taken involuntarily. In any event scientists and doctors are still able to research her cells and maybe one day soon someone can find a way to assist not only the descendants of Henrietta Lacks in preventing cancer, but people everywhere affected by cancer.
