What good things did Orwell say about the British Empire? He was famous for his criticism of it, but I've heard that he thought it was better than other empires. A newspaper article he wrote said the administration of Burma was "by no means unpopular." I saw it said that, along with T.S. Eliot, he defended the Empire at the BBC - presumably on a program, but it didn't say.

Umm, thanks for that. In the essay, "Shooting an Elephant", the narrator said the British Empire was "a great deal better than the younger empires that are going to supplant it." There is doubt over whether the essay is auto-biographical, but the pages turned up by Google all seem to think it was, and the narrator was, like Orwell, a police officer in Burma who, again like Orwell, criticized the Empire severely.

I'm looking for something even better.
