There are references in the original Hebrew Masoretic texts to the 'sons of Belial' which is what many people think to be the reference. Certainly there is a demonic connection. You have to look at the KJV for the word 'belial' and note the many references in critical (yet mysterious) passages. It's referred to in Deuteronomy, David talked about them in 2 Sam 22 (I think) and they were apparently consorts with Jezebel in killing Naboth. The same word is translated as Beelezebul in Greek in the New Testament.
