What do you know about musket balls drilled through?

I recently dug a musket ball in Pocotaligo, South Carolina that both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War overlapped on the same land. The ball is about .750" and has a hole drilled through it. I found a post on a British site that states the British drilled holes in the musket balls then forced dung in the holes. This supposedly was one of the first biological type weapons which I assume to mean infection in the wounds.

Please see picture of find and explanation I found on a British forum.

Can anyone add to this theory and tell me if it is correct and if so...did this practice also take place in the Revolutionary War.
