What are the role of microbes as reagent in organic synthesis?

Some microbes are used in synthesis but most are not. Sugar is converted to Ethanol and CO2 using microbes, Oil is broken down to smaller molecules by others. Nitrogenous compounds are reduced with microbes...Since the field is very large and each bug doers something different, you would almost need to pick a microbe to talk about.
