I was on the USS Saratoga CV-60 in Naples on July 15, 1958 where we were scrambled to support the Lebanon deployment of troops. The USS Essex was there, not the USS Wasp. The Battleship New Jersey was also scrambled to support the troops. Indeed they Bombarded hills and caves overlooking Beirut. The Saratoga air group flew constant sorties over Lebanon, Syria and Jordan during the crisis.

You are wrong about the Wasp, matec1986. I was on the USS Wasp in Naples in July 1958, and the ship abruptly left to head for the eastern Mediterranean as a result of the Lebanon Crisis.(The Wasp was an Essex-class carrier.)

Hi Norman2012,
I stand corrected. The Saratoga left Cannes, France July 15, 1958. I have a copy of Saratoga newspaper printed on the ship in 1958. I quote "The 15th of July found the Sixth Fleet moving out and in a hurry, from Canes (Saratoga) and Naples (Wasp), Suda Bay Greece and Augustine Bay or wherever they had been the night before, units of the Fleet were now steaming towards a rendezvous somewhere off the coast of Lebanon, thus commenced a time Of day and night operations that would not cease for the Saratoga for almost one month.
