Fire pump

We have connected our fire pump (electric) to a static water storage tank (Positive)with in 2 mts away. The diameter of suction and delivery pipes are same (dia 150mm). Please confirm whether we have to increase the suction diameter to one size at least more than the delivery size.

What will happen if both the pipe sizes remain same. The discharge pipe is travelling more than 150 mts from pump connecting to various external and internal hydrants. The maximum elevation of pipe from pump is minimum 20 mts.

Please confirm.

The pipes can be same, however this is often not the case.
Most booster pump manufacturers have the suction flange greater than the discharge flange.

Per NFPA 20 section4.26 Summary of Centrifugal Fire Pump Data. The sizes indicated in Table 4.26(a) and Table 4.26(b) shall be used as a MINIMUM.

Per NFPA 20 section A.4.15.5 The discharge pipe size should be such that, with the pump(s) operating at 150 percent of rated capacity, the velocity in the discharge pipe does not exceed 6.1 m/sec.

Hope this helps.
