Not many people know that Ernest "Ernie" Robison wrote the words on the plaque at Deep Cut. He was a historian who lived in Spencerville through the construction of the canal that ran down the middle of town. About 5 miles down on Highway 66 you will find Deep Cut. When the canal froze over I skated on the ice with some friends from my aunt's house to Deep Cut, then we skated back. Mr. Robison lived in my aunt's house. He had a heart condition and could no longer live on his farm. My aunt was an RN and took care of him until he passed away in the 80's. There were several articles written about Ernie and the canal. Historian students would come to talk to him and get information about the building of the canal and Deep Cut. He was on the library board and served on the board at the Allen Co. museum in Lima, OH. There, at the museum is a bronze bust of Mr. Robison to commemorate his physical as well as literature donations to the museum. Growing up around Uncle Ernie, as we called him, was some of the best years of my life. He not only taught us about the history of the area and his time in the army, he taught us about life. I miss you Ernie.
