Two boats are approaching a mark on a beat. Boat B is the windward boat and is passing Boat A but is not clear ahead.
The mark is approx 90 Deg from the direction of travel and is to leeward. Boat A approaches close to a moored boat before bearing away towards the mark leaving Boat B no choice but to fall in behind Boat A to avoid hitting the moored boat.

Boat A did not stear a proper course, or did it?

The moored boat is and obstruction. Boat A has the right to clear an obstruction and is the inside boat and has the right to room at the mark. Seems like A was on a proper coarse to clear an obstruction and the mark.

Yes thanks I see what you mean but the moored boat was not an obstruction it was just that boat A when changing course for the mark left boat B with no choice but to fall in behind A - or take a longer route around the moored boat. My point is that boat A sailed further that was necessary to maintain a proper course - by some distance. Tricky without a sketch
