Today in my back yard in south central PA at about 9:30 AM I listened to Cicadas buzzing in our old and large silver maple tree. I noticed three blue jays fly into the tree (I am not sure if the blue jays made any call as the flew in). AS the blue jays came within about 5 meters of the tree, the cicadas stopped buzzing: completely. One of the blue jays quickly caught and cicada and ate it quickly. The blue jays then perched in the tree for about a minute or so and then flew off in the same direction they were heading (NW) on approach to thetree. About a few minutes after they left, the cicada resumed buzzing but at what seemed to be a significantly lower volume. My question is: how did all of the cicadas coordinate their discontinuation of buzzing? The quieting did not coincide with any call the bluejays made. I also understand from your article that only males buzz and that they may shut down or dampen their hearing when they do so. Was the cessation in buzzing a coincidence? Has this phenomena been observed by others? Thanks!
