There is an historical marker in the little triangle park near Camp Dennison where the cannon is. This marker, upright and with a glassed-in panel, reports the history of the onset of the Civil War with a date.
It says, "Fort Sumpter was attacked in 1868.". I think you will agree that Fort Sumpter was attacked in 1861.
When young students of American history are trying to get things right, and they understand that the Civil raged from 1861 to 1865, they will naturally wonder why the Confederacy chose to fire on Fort Sumpter three years after the War was over.
Think of the distorted impression that a susceptible young mind might carry away: "The South fired on Fort Sumpter three years after the Civil War was over? Boy, I guess they mean it on those license plates when they say, "Fergit' Hell!"
