In my research, gathering information on the German Ardennes offensive for several years now, I have come to the conclusion that the German timetable and hopes of success was virtually elimated within the first three days by the efforts of two badly mauled divisions the 28th and 99th ( in the area for rest and reconstitution) and two green divisions the 106th in the center and the
9th Armored which was stretched along the 75 mile front. Though they paid with the severest casualties of any US outfits, fighting 20 to 1 odds, surprise, poor weather, and destroyed communications. They bought time with their lives and saved Bastone and St, Vith long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
