The use of a rainforest, jungle or wilderness as a literary device was common in literature at the time. Some contemporary novels which use this device include The Wizard of Oz.

The title of this book is meant specifically as criticism of capitalism. Sinclair's Packingtown, where the action takes place, is reminiscent of a jungle for its competitive, amoral survival-of-the-fittest atmosphere.
