The fleet submarine of WWII was of double hulled construction. The pressure or inner hull contained all equipment for operating the submarine. The outer hull was made of lighter material and in between the two hulls were ballast tanks and fuel tanks etc. Was this outer hull supported by a truss type system that was spaced such that the width of the unsupported outer hull could withstand pressure at depth?
