Geoffrey Chaucer

Many consider Chaucer the father of modern English literature. They feel his work is the source of the vernacular tradition in English literature.

There was a general trend toward the use of the vernacular in literature at the time. Dante was the first to use the Italian vernacular to write the Divine Comedy.
