In 1839 member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints purchased a town in Illinois which they called Nauvoo. Here they hoped to escape persecution.

Non-LDS citizens living nearby became suspicious of Nauvoo's theocratic government and jealous of the benefits Mormon farmers shared as a result of their collective efforts.
