We have just spent about two weeks in Holborn, and have noticed spots all over the pavements..and a fierce debate has arisen as to what they are. Some of us say they are bird droppings, others chewing gum. They appear to have lichen on them.

Can anyone definitively identify what they are? It is driving us batty.
