Seven Dials

So, let me see if I understand this. There are six sundials around the base of a six sided pillar in the center of a circular area. On the top of the pillar is a small ball on a thin rod. As actually built there are were seven roads; but originally, the architect planned six roads radiating out from the circular area, presumably arranged symmetricly and aligned with the six sides of the pillar.

Are you sure there are only six sundials? Was the architect an always serious sort of fellow, or was he sometimes a pull your leg sort?
