Smart Lipo - Are You a Good Candidate?

Smart Lipo, a technique more properly known as laser-assisted liposuction, offers a less painful, less costly and less demanding alternative to traditional lipo surgery.

Basically, the surgeon user a laser beam to “melt” fat (well, not entirely true; but it may give you an idea as to how it works).

In normal liposuction, a cannula is inserted in the body and used to suck fat. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision, inserts a thin tube and starts the vacuuming process. This is called tumescent lipo.

As you know by experience, fat is a little stubborn. Fat tissues not only defy physical exercise but also the action of the vacuum device in the surgical block. To facilitate suction, surgeons disrupt the membranes of fat cells. They do so with strong back and forth movements of the cannula. These movements cause bruises and some bleeding.

When laser technology is combined with tumescent liposuction, the operation becomes “Smart Lipo”— initially a trademark—or, laser-assisted liposuction.

In laser-assisted surgeries, the cannula is used to guide the high-energy light ray of a laser to the target fat tissues. After applying the tumescent fluid, the surgeon passes an optic fiber through the cannula and operates a laser scalpel.

When the scalpel beam reaches the cells, an oily substance comes from the fat cells. This “oil” is the fat contained inside the fat tissue (fat cells in human beings work as containers that grow larger when the body gains weight).

Although we said above that the laser melts fat, the proper word would be “liquefies”. Then, the oil goes through the cannula to the vacuum tank. In certain occasions, when the treated area is small, no vacuuming is needed: the body absorbs and removes the fat through the liver.

Because the beam is used to disrupt the membranes instead of the cannula itself, the procedure results in fewer bruises. Fewer bruises mean shorter recovery times and lesser costs.

The heat of the laser beam coagulates blood. This turns into less bleeding, which in turn means less downtime. Most patients recover in two or three days; some are back work within only one day of downtime after their surgery.

Realistic expectations
Laser-assisted liposuction has certain limitations. Ideal candidates have healthy immune systems and are not too overweight. Patients with more than 25% of their ideal body mass may need to consider alternative treatments, because Smart Lipo is not a weight reduction technique, but a body shaping procedure.

In other words, patients must have realistic expectations before entering the operating room. The neck, abdomen and other tiny areas are perfect candidates for Colorado Smart Lipo.
