According to scientific studies, farming communities are experiencing lowering of water tables and there are gross underestimations of the amount of water needed for extraction.

:There are many reports of leaking methane gas from wells and ponds which are contaminating the environment.

:Toxic chemicals remain in the ground and water after the extraction process.

:There has been contamination of surrounding areas from overflow of holding ponds including permanent leakage from wells and ponds.

A recent United Nations study (The Integrated Assessment of Black Carbon and Troposheric Ozone) found the projected rise in global temperatures could be reduced by half if governments could focus on reducing black carbon and ground- level ozone including methane.

These two pollutants when compared with carbon dioxide, which can stay in the atmosphere for decades, have short lifetimes; black carbon, a component of soot, is classified as a threat to human health and hastens snow melting while ground- level ozone and methane causes adverse health effects and kills farm crops.
