Restoring gone wrong ?

i had an assignment open with neo office (on my mac), it was saved. My computer stalled a day later, so i restarted it and when neooffice started up it restored my file- but to the version that was saved before i shut down my computer- 2 times ago?! what went wrong/ HOW do i fix it? is there a way i can retrieve the actual version?
