Question about police car radio repeaters ....

I understand that when i talk on my portable radio it sends my signal to my patrol car and then my patrol car repeater sends it out. My question is this .... does it work both ways... when my dispatch broadcasts a call to me does it go to my car radio first and then my car radio / repeater rebroadcast it back to my portable hand held radio??
