Puberphonia! What is it? How many guys do you know with high pitched voices that are the butt of many a joke?

I've posted my story at http://www.puberphonia.info

There may be a simple cure....but, I suffered with it for over 40 years.....nobody heard of it.

I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you that I was told that in some cases the brain has to be reprogrammed to speak in a different way. The exercise where you say "boom" is the one that I've heard the most about. But, you should find a good speech pathologist and ask them about treating puberphonia.

I did find out that the scar tissue that one doctor told me I had, wasn't there when the new doctor looked. I think that many doctors don't know about this condition.

In my case, I think that when I had mono, I was 14 and while I was sick my vocal chords matured, but I never learned to use them, since I was supposed to keep quiet. It was bad timing.

My speech pathologist told me I had the longest case she had ever heard about. Keep looking for a doctor who says "I can cure you". Don't take no for an answer.

And, don't let them give you the baloney about immature sexual dependence, or whatever, attachment to Mommy..etc. It can be just a physical thing easily cured.

I went to a speech therapist 4 yrs ago
he told me about voice therapy and advised me to practice voice exercises like humming ,saying vowels ,coughing ,breathing exercises .but i was unable to change my voice
and one day i tried to shout and i realized that i have another deep voice apart from the disgusting feminine voice and i told him about his voice and showed him
he said the deep voice is absolutely fine and told me to use it, but i was not convinced at that time
but i am using this deep voice now and its been 2 months and i am fine now but my problem is that i am unable to talk freely i mean i have to use my voice by force and my old voice is coming in between so i want to know any exercises can help me to solve this problem completely
so can u tell me about the exercises that u practiced?

I had this problem too and the speech therapist said I should come in and we would talk...about anything...for an hour. That did the trick. Once you have found the new voice it needs to come out. The brain must be reprogrammed. In my case it takes much less effort to speak in the new voice.

Sounds like you need a therapist who is willing to take the time to work with you.

There is another part of the therapy which is psychological. You may actually be fighting the new voice. I was know as Tom, the guy with the funny voice.
The new voice will change you to Name, the guy fill in the blank. Your friends and family will see you differently.

I realized the difference when I made a PA announcement at the store in the new voice and everyone came running to help me. In the old voice, I got ignored.

Just keep talking. Tape yourself and try to keep the low voice for as long as you can.

I am 20yrs old.I also had a female voice I went to ENT doc. She said it was puberphonia. She referred me to speech therapy.I took speech therapy for one session and in that i was asked to sound aaaaaaa repeatedly in a heavy voice. I cud not continue the therapy due to some reason plus I felt that now that i can produce a new voice i will practice at home. Now I can speak in a heavier voice but the problem is that my throat gets fatigued very soon with this new voice. Also the voice goes hoarse after sometime . Was it the same case with u all ? or am I producing a 'wrong' voice.

My voice broke at around the age of 12 with the onset of what was perceived a peculiar high-pitched hoarseness. At the same time I was able to use a very deep voice which my grandma discouraged me to use.. possibly thinking I was fooling around. I have to say, the break from my childhood voice was quite abrupt (I used to be able to attack the high pitch notes only girls could when singing) so I was probably expecting a smoother transition to my mature voice. Months passed, years passed, and everyone had now grown accustomed to the fact of my funny voice. I got into highschool and other boys would be laughing at me whenever attendance was checked and I had to say my name. One day I simply decided that it was time to use the other, low pitched voice I knew I had at my disposal. No one ever said anything, they all accepted it matter-of-fact. I was 15, I didn't know what puberphonia was, neither seemed my mom (a doctor) to know or anyone else. I'm glad I was my own therapist. It took a few months for the new voice to stabilize, there were occasional slips to the higher pitch, but then I couldn't go back to the old voice even if I tried. If my boy ever goes through the same thing, I will know what to tell him.

I'm 15 years old & i'm suffering from puberphonia. My voice has become a hoarse voice previouly about 3-4 months ago it was only a high pitched voice bt now it has become hoarse.

My therapist told that u keep practicing the voice therapies bt there is no change in the voice. Was this the same case with u all? When i try to sing songs my voice becomes deeper & no hoarseness take place,Is this a good sign?

Can any1 tell me how can i cure my hoarseness & how can i keep using my second voice??
